Should You Add Dietary Supplements to Your Diet?

The sports nutrition business is a multi-billion dollar industry. There are tons of products available at the local supermarket or health food store that all promise to increase muscle mass, speed up fat loss and give an extra burst of energy when you need it. If you try to keep up with taking every “breakthrough” supplement on the market, you will soon find that you are losing a lot of weight, but it will all be from your bank account.

Before you start taking supplements to make your diet healthier, think about what the word supplement really means. When you supplement, you are replacing something with something else. In other words, you are replacing the nutrient in your diet that you could, or should be getting from whole foods, with a powder, or capsule. This idea isn’t necessarily bad, but you should try to think in terms of getting what your body needs from whole foods before you start to take a lot of supplements.

If you take the time to make sure that you are eating several nutrient-dense meals a day and you are still missing some things, you probably should look at some of the supplements on the market. After all, if you are working out hard, it can be difficult to eat enough meals to get all of the protein that you need to build your muscles.

Here are the supplements that should be at the top of your list for maintaining a healthy diet.

• A good multi-vitamin. Even if you eat a very healthy diet of whole foods, you probably aren’t getting optimum levels of all the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. A good multi-vitamin can help you get healthy levels of all the necessary vitamins and minerals that you need.

• Quality Whey Protein. Many people fall short of getting adequate protein intake when working out. Your body needs the amino acids found in protein to repair your muscles after a hard workout. The best protein blasts you can get are from Whey Protein Isolate supplements. This kind of protein is very lean and easily absorbed by your body, especially after hard workouts.

• Fiber & Fish Oil. The last two pieces of your nutritional supplement foundation should be a fiber supplement and fish oil supplements. Both of these inexpensive nutritional supplements are packed with healthy ingredients that everybody needs more of. Fiber intake should be high for everyone. More fiber will help you avoid digestive problems and keep your digestive system regular. Fish oil contains valuable Omega fatty acids that are essential for good health and vitality. Be sure to add these two supplements to your diet.

Avoid the temptation to always go after the most popular supplements on the market. Instead concentrate on eating clean and having the essential supplements mentioned in this article. You’ll be a lot healthier and you’ll save some money too.
