DIET is a Four Letter Word – Change the Way You Think About Eating for Life

What comes to mind when you hear the word “diet”? For most of us diet really is a bad word. It implies limiting ourselves and being overly disciplined. Being on a diet implies a ball and chain that we have to wear for weeks, months, or even years. You’re not allowed to have any of the foods you like on a diet and you have to record or account for every bite of food that you have. Yes diet truly is a four letter word and that’s why it’s time to change the way you think about healthy eating.


Diets Are Always Temporary
Another thing that is common when people talk about diets is a time limit. People go on diets for a few weeks, or for a month, or for some kind of predetermined amount of time. That’s good until the minute the diet is over. People will cast off all restraint at the end of a diet and gorge themselves like crazy on the worst kinds of foods. What they end up with is the dreaded “Yo-Yo Weight Gain.” People go on a diet, lose a few pounds, go off that diet and gain the weight back. Some people spend their entire lives going up and down on this ride and it is a horrible ride to be on. That is why you have to stop thinking in terms of diet from this point forward.

Eating Right Is a Lifestyle

Stop thinking about the next diet and start taking steps towards eating healthy for the rest of your life. Begin to add more healthy fruits and vegetables to your diet on a regular basis. Take steps to up your fiber intake, and ease back on the junk food. Here are some tips to help you develop a healthy eating lifestyle that trumps every diet in terms of results.

• Structure meals so that you are eating 4 to 6 small meals a day instead of a few large meals.
• Have a lean source of protein, like chicken, fish or lean beef with every meal.
• Have a fruit and vegetable serving with every meal.
• Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water every day. Drink more when exercising or out in the heat.
• Replace white breads and flour products with whole grain alternatives.
• Add nuts, seeds and beans to at least two of your meals every day.
• Have a day every week where one of your meals is a “fun food” that isn’t necessarily healthy, but will help keep you sane and enjoy eating. Use this meal as a reward each week for sticking to a healthy eating lifestyle.


If you add these easy to do eating rituals to your eating plan, you will be done with diets for life. You may find it tough for the first month, but stick with it. After a month or so of eating this way, it will become your “new normal” You will get used to eating this way. You will feel better, and you will lose unhealthy weight too. So, no more diets for you – you are on the healthy eating for life plan from now on.
