Want to Lose Weight and Get Into Shape? Get a Dog!

One of the things that hold a lot of us back from getting into shape is a lack of motivation. This can be easily overcome if you just go out and get yourself a dog. Dogs need lots of attention and exercise, and when you play with a dog, you are getting exercise yourself, and you're having so much fun that you don't even realize it.

Dogs Make Great Walking Companions

When you have a dog, you will have to force yourself to start taking walks, or longer walks if you already take short ones. Dogs have loads of energy, and will want to go for long walks, so you will be getting plenty of exercise and fresh air. Most dogs love to run, so if you are really energetic, you can take your dog jogging instead of simply going for a walk. And, unlike people, you can go for a long run or walk without hearing any complaints from others who are tired or sore and want to go home. Your dog will walk or run with you all day long if you let it.

Agility Classes Are Great for You, Too

If you have, or are thinking about getting a dog, you may be interested in taking it to agility classes. This is a great way to teach your dog obedience, as well as give it the exercise it needs. And, you will be getting exercise too, because you will be continually walking your dog through the course. The same holds true for obedience classes, where you will be training your dog to walk beside you, so you are getting exercise there too.

Playing at the Dog Park Can Be Great Exercise

You can get lots of exercise when you take your dog to the local dog park. Fun games of tug of war with favorite toys is a great way to build up muscles in your arms, especially if you have a large or strong dog, and of course, there are always fun games of "chase" to be had. Fetch is great exercise for you too, because after a while, dogs usually figure it out that if they don't go and fetch whatever you have thrown, you will go and get it for them. Again, you are getting lots of walking in.

So, as you can see, you don't need to join an expensive gym or health club to get into great shape. All you really need is a dog to get all of the exercise you need.
